What should I expect from my New Patient appointment?

New Patient Naturopathic & Ayurvedic appointments are conducted in two 1.5 hour visits: Your Initial Intake appointment & an Initial Follow-Up or “Plan” appointment.

During your Initial 1.5 hour Naturopathic Intake visit you should come prepared to discuss a thorough health history with your Doctor & specifically the events that have led to your present condition. In addition, New Patients always receive a comprehensive Vitalistic Physical Exam to assess every aspect of their wellbeing. We begin with a Food Intolerance Evaluation & Urinary Indican Test to analyze digestive function. All of our doctors also perform a General Vitality Assessment & an Endocardiograph (Heart Sound Analysis) on each valve of your heart to appreciate the condition & strength of your vital force & any nutritional deficiencies that may exist. Finally, Chapman Reflex point appraisal to assess organ function, an Iridology exam (Iris study) to confirm physical, mental, & emotional irritations &/or weaknesses, & Deep Tendon Reflex & Calcium Status tests are included with Dr. Andersen’s visits. The Initial 1.5 hour Naturopathic Follow-Up visit is necessary to review results from the Physical Exams mentioned above, deliver your comprehensive treatment plan, & answer any questions you may have concerning our recommendations & their intended actions.

During your Initial 1.5 hour Ayurvedic Intake visit you should come prepared to discuss a thorough health history with your Doctor & specifically the events that have led to your present condition. We perform both the Ayurvedic Pulse & Tongue Diagnosis to compare with your personal experience gathered during the Intake, as well as our Constitutional & Current State Questionnaire results, allowing us the insight necessary to fully appreciate & synthesize your unique situation. The Initial 1.5 hour Ayurvedic Follow-Up visit is necessary to review the results from your Intake, Physical Exams, & Questionnaire responses, provide a complete & corresponding Ayurvedic treatment plan, & answer any questions you may have concerning our recommendations & their intended actions.

*If you opt for the Combination Naturopathic & Ayurvedic appointment, the Physical Exams included in both types of visits are combined into the Initial 1.5 hour Intake. Then, you will be scheduled for two 1.5 hour Follow-Up appointments, either separate or back-to-back (ie. one 3 hour visit), to discuss the results from your Naturopathic & Ayurvedic evaluations, respectively.

Your Naturopathic Doctors are able to order & interpret any lab work you may require. They have partnered with a number of local labs to ensure the best rates possible for you. Our doctors are able to order standard blood panels, as well as more advanced labs like adrenal health (cortisol testing), female & male hormone levels, food sensitivity panels, neurotransmitter assessment, nutrient evaluations, IBS, SIBO & intestinal dysbiosis measurements, & heavy metal testing.

Why are the visits an hour and a half long?

Naturopathic medicine is built on the principles of treating the whole person & supporting every patient as a unique individual, rather than just silencing their symptomatic complaints. We find that lasting health is only obtained by addressing the underlying, fundamental cause of one’s dis-ease, & any other attempt to subdue or suppress the body’s actions (ie. symptoms) towards health always result in a loss of healing capacity & deeper seating of the essential imbalance that the body was trying to remedy & heal. In order for your doctor to determine the root cause of your specific situation, they must know the full story; oftentimes it can be the minor details of a person's life that bring about the most significant changes. Your doctor also strives to make appointments educational & personally-tailored to each patient's needs. Finally, we believe that it is indispensable for you to be involved in your own healing process, & the best way to accomplish this is to first cultivate an appreciation & understanding of the causes that have led to your particular situation, & second to provide a thorough explanation of the treatment plan's therapeutic action & intended outcome. This personalized, thorough approach provides an ample opportunity for you to tell your whole story, ask any questions that may arise, & be heard without feeling hurried in any way.

How often do I have to come in after the initial two visits?

Although there is no prescribed schedule for follow-up after the initial plan, people typically revisit within the following 1-2 months to assess effectiveness of the current treatment course & discuss any difficulties that have arisen in complying with the plan. It is customary for your Doctor to begin your first visit with a thorough physical assessment remove any obstacles to cure that exist in your diet, vitality, & weakened organ systems. Follow-up visits allow for more time to explore the mental, emotional, & even spiritual influences on your physical health, in the event some of your symptoms are not resolving. The schedule ranges for each person & is based on an individual's ability to integrate the recommendations made during the original appointments, their individual goals & needs, & their personal resources. This is something that you & your Doctor will discuss together & collaborate on.

How involved do I need to be in my treatment plan? What does doctor-patient collaboration mean?

At Matrix Wellness you are the core of your treatment plan. That is to say that you are the fulcrum or balance point from which all things depend on. If you choose to incorporate & integrate our dietary & lifestyle recommendations, & therapeutic interventions, you allow your body, mind, & spirit to integrate collectively as the therapist, restoring your entire being to a state of balance. We provide direction & guidance that empower you to take health & healing into your own hands.

When we talk about the doctor-patient relationship, it is a two-way street. We get to know you, your ups & downs, and specifically your unique situation. In this, we develop a personal understanding, or connection if you will, of the individual we are treating, and we’re able to recommend custom-tailored treatment plans to address your particular symptom picture. Then, when we follow-up, we are able to assess what seems to be working as well as where any further intervention may be necessary. Naturopathic Doctors are equipped with an extensive array of therapeutic offerings to address anything from physical to mental/emotional & even spiritual complaints, & we work together with you to handcraft recommendations that will fit into your unique lifestyle.

How long will it take before I see results?

Recovery depends on many factors such as your diagnosis, how long you've been sick, & the complexity of your case. Some people have a genetic predisposition that makes healing more difficult. Nutrient deficiencies, environmental toxicities, or a history of infections or pharmaceutical use are other obstacles that can prolong an individual’s rehabilitation time. Another important factor is your ability to commit to your treatment plan & make the necessary dietary & lifestyle changes to efficiently augment & support your individual supplemental & therapeutic recommendations. Many people notice immediate improvements in digestion, increased energy, decreased inflammation, & better sleep within weeks, all indicators that the body, mind & spirit are working collaboratively towards a state of health & wellness. Other symptoms can take longer to resolve. It is important to remember that your illness did not develop overnight & that real healing simply takes time. When we discuss your Initial Follow-Up Plan with you we’ll set realistic expectations for a treatment timeline.

Can you get me off my prescription medications?

In the State of Colorado, we cannot prescribe or de-prescribe any pharmaceutical prescription medications for our patients. As your health improves, you may require a smaller dose of your medications or be able to discontinue them altogether under the guidance of your prescribing physician. Some people may need to remain on their medications depending on their condition. With your permission, we will collaborate with your physician to manage your care & reach your personal health goals.

Additionally, it’s best not to have eaten a full two hours prior to your treatment session to avoid any digestive disturbance.
